Family Turkey Project

One of my favorite Thanksgiving activities of the season is the Family Turkey Project. In the assignment students are given a blackline master of a turkey and asked to decorate it with their families. I believe the original copy came from a book from Teacher Created Resources called
Thanksgiving Thematic Unit. Below are some of this years turkeys.
Thanksgiving Thematic Unit
I love the pink feathered turkey! The sky and clouds are made from felt.

Rainbow feathers and foam stickers decorate this one!

M&M's made this turkey decorative AND delicious!

This turkey is made from dyed macaroni probably found in the pantry.

This turkey includes macaroni, cheerios, beans and seeds.

This turkey is made from foam pieces and macaroni!

I found the pattern online from Mrs. Nelson's Class.
You can even print out her letter to parents that explains the project.

Numbers with Bingo Markers 1-5

Students use Bingo Markers to make the shape of the numeral. This set includes numbers 1-5. Common Core Math Standards require students to be able to write numbers 1-20. This activity is great for the beginning of the school year to be used in a center.

I purchased my Bingo Markers at Dollar Tree.

My Kindergarten Classroom 2012-2013

Here is a glimpse of my new classroom at my new school days before school started back on August 6th:

Two Pinterest projects can be seen here. First my "no sew" curtains made with a clever little thing called "stitch witch". Then I have "My 1st Day of Kindergarten" frame.

My Word Wall another Pinterest project. I created the ABC letter which can be found in my TPT store and used scrapbook paper to make the banner. This Word Wall is magnetic so students can take the word they need to their desk to copy.
My Focus Wall and small group teaching table.
I have a connecting door to my teammate!
Love my built-in cubbies!

Yay! I got a SmartBoard! You can also see my Class Library and standards pocket chart. The banner says Common Core.
View from carpet area.

Rearranged boards due to my OCD. I wanted the charts to be lower so they could be interactive. You can also see a glimpse of my Dr. Seuss quote besides the clock: Think and Wonder. Wonder and Think.

WHOO Loves Owls?!?!

Owl & Polka Dot Name Plates
It's summertime but as usual all of us teachers are busy working on ideas for our Back to School. My main goals was trying to decide if I wanted to go with an Owl theme or a Polka Dot theme. Since I couldn't decide on just one I ended up combining the two themes! I think they look great together! My first project was to create was these cute little name plates. The final result are available from my TPT store.

Manic Monday @ Classroom Freebies! Woot Woot!

Mother's Day is around the corner so this week we are writing letters to Mom. This Can-Have-Are Tree Chart will get my kinder kids thinking about all the wonderful things their Moms can do for them and for others. Students will get creative when they think about what Moms have and finally they may make their momma cry when they describe how Moms are!

The Rainbow Fish and "The Hat" App

This week and next in our reading program, Success For All, we have been on a unit called Water Wonders. One day we read the book The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.
After we read the story students labeled the parts of the Rainbow Fish with a worksheet I found on Pinterest (of course!). It came from a blog called The Learning Parade. When they finished labeling they colored the fish with the exception of one scale that we applied glitter glue. Kids LOVE glitter and so do I!

During writing we wrote about the Rainbow Fish and did a craftivity. We used tissue paper and googly eyes. For the special scale I cut pieces of aluminum foil.

The next day we acted out the story. A co-worker of mine introduced us to a cool  and free application called The Hat that randomly selects students. The app can also select pairs of students and you have the option of saving and or printing out the results. We used it for our dramatization to select the roles of the Rainbow Fish, the Starfish, the wise Octopus and the little friend fish. Below is a picture of a screen of the app.

The children were super excited as the names were being selected. Below are the kids selected included the Rainbow Fish, the Starfish, our Book Holder (LOL) to help guide us through the story and the wise Octopus.
The students loved watching the story coming to life right in front of them. Now the kids wants to act out EVERY book and EVERYONE wants to be selected!

The Lorax

The Lorax
We made a "Lorax" headband after reading
the book "The Lorax".
Students colored and cut out a pattern I found on the web. They glued it to an orange strip of construction paper. They colored a black nose and glued two googly eyes!
Students wrote "I speak for the trees" on the back of their headbands.

I got in this picture with my students!
